What we do

About the pub

Great pizza, great beer, great people

The Wheel is a New Haven, CT style “apizza” (ah-beetz) parlor that meets San Francisco-inspired naturally leavened dough, expertly crafted beer and thoughtfully sourced ingredients. Add a heavy dose of Eugene culture and you have The Wheel Apizza Pub.

Our dough is naturally leavened for 48–72 hours using locally grown and milled grains, then baked in a high efficiency electric brick floor oven for a thin, crispy crust with rustic char. It’s harder to make this way, and we think the flavor is worth it. Kids love it too.

No, we don’t use a coal oven like they do in New Haven — not with the air quality here in the Willamette Valley. Our Pizza Master oven gives just the right crispy crust with rustic char, without the smoke.

We’re in a historic brick building at the foot of Skinner’s Butte, in the heart of the original Eugene settlement. Built by the railroad tracks as a produce warehouse, it’s framed from old growth Doug fir, with tables, bar and kitchen tables built from Western Cherry harvested at Mt. Pisgah and live edge booth tops of local Poplar. Big tables, an open floor plan — a pub in its truest sense, where the Whiteaker and Market districts meet.

The Brewery

We founded the Wheel to be a brewpub and pizzeria, bringing together two artisan endeavors in the same friendly pub.

While brewing classic traditional styles, we also use creative modern brewing techniques to offer a diverse lineup of approachable, drinkable pub beers — from bright bitter West Coast IPAs to creamy juicy Hazy IPAs, crisp Pils to barrel-aged Stouts, elegant Sours to Oregon grown Amber. We support Oregon hop and barley farms as much as possible, and use imported ingredients to create authentic, supreme quality beers.

Meet the Brewer

Tobias Schock is the founding brewer at the Wheel.

Coming from humble homebrewing roots and working his way through the brewing industry, he has gained 15 years of diverse experience along the way. Some might know him from his time at a Eugene homebrew shop, or working a grape harvest crush at a Whiteaker winery. He has brewed at both an expanding production brewery and a small organic hop farm brewery.

His values of sourcing the highest quality ingredients, supporting local farmers and using a diversity of cultures have found a home at the Wheel. His recipe development is strongly rooted in historic traditions of brewing culture, while blurring the lines of style definitions — guided by flavor profiles and intuition.

Toby brews this temporary liquid art form with his whole heart. The community pub is as old as beer itself, and this pub is the place where Toby’s beer becomes your beer.

“Really good pizza. We got the margherita and the longbridge hacker. Both were really good. It was enough for four. The kombucha was also great.”

“We recently had the best Apizza style pizza one could have in the state of Connecticut (perhaps in the U.S.) Frank Pepe’s and Modern so when I saw The Wheel Apizza pub online, we quickly placed an order and picked up two different pizzas (cheese and pepperoni) and we quickly realized we now have a new pizza favorite spot!”

“I split a salad and one of the house pizzas with my bestie. Both were delicious and had me thinking about going back, which will be soon. It’s located in an interesting building with indoor and outdoor seating, the staff was nice, and there was a wide variety of customers.”
